Achiness or Pain Behind the Eyes
Achiness or pain behind the eyes, also known as eye strain or asthenopia is common, especially in this day and age where we use computers and hand held devices close to our eyes. This can also be related to sinus problems and an whole host of other issues. We treat achiness or pain behind the eyes on a daily basis.
Difficulty Focusing at Distance after Computer or Reading / Refocusing / Fluctuation
This is a common problem caused when our focus system doesn’t relax looking at distance after a lot of time staring up close at books, computers or hand held devices. Focus problems might indicate something unhealthy with your eyes. Our doctors are experts at solving problems with intermittent blur, focus and unfocusing issues and shifting, changing vision.
Need to Blink a Lot to Focus
If you need to blink a lot to focus or clear your vision you may be suffering from anything from vision issues through progressively worsening dry eye problems. Spots in Vision
If you see spots in your vision it’s imperative you visit an eye doctor as soon as possible. Spots can mean many things; most are treatable if caught soon enough. Our doctors will easily be able to determine the cause of the spots in your vision and help you to understand why they are there and if something needs to be done, what can be done to help resolve them.
Itchy eyes can be a sign of an infection, inflammation or other eye problem. It’s important not to rub your eyes and come in and see our doctors so they can determine what causes the itch and provide a solution that will give you relief.
Eye rubbing is usually bad for the eyes. It is brought on in response to inflammation, allergy, infection, fatigue and numerous other factors. In rare cases it can lead to a distortion of the cornea of the eye so dissuade children and friends from rubbing and persuade them to see a doctor. If you feel the need to rub your eyes we can help provide a healthier solution to the discomfort or strain you feel.
Eye strain may be related to uncorrected visual error, working distance (how close or far you sit from an object of regard you are staring at), or a medical condition with your eyes. Sometimes the eyes don’t want to work together and that causes strain. In all cases our doctors have solutions to reduce strain and increase your efficiency at school or work or for your hobbies.
Colored contact lenses are a solution we offer for people who want to change the appearance of the color of their eyes. These contacts in many cases are thin, disposable and comfortable when fit by an optometrist. Come in and see which colors might be best for you.
Astigmatism, also called “astigma”, stigma and other nicknames defines the shape of the eye and is not a disease. The eye in people with astigmatism may be shaped more oblong, like the curve on a football than people with rounder eyes. People with astigmatism might experience visual blur and/or eyestrain easily treated with the right eye glass prescription or contact lens prescription. We treat thousands of patients with astigmatism each year.
When playing sports it is important to see clearly and protect the eyes from trauma. Sports glasses can help both. Lately companies have come out with stylish, thin and light sports eyewear that can help athletes play better, safer and look good. We offer these solutions in our optical.

Optometrists are the blurry vision experts. There are a multitude of reasons vision can become blurry, and it’s important to sort it out. Most cases of blurry vision are “refractive” in nature, meaning they can be corrected with lenses from eyeglasses or contact lenses. Less common is blurry vision related to eye disease. Although less common, it’s important to have blurred vision checked as soon as possible as most of the serious things that can lead to blurry vision can be corrected if caught early enough.
Dry eyes can be a huge problem for many. Not only is it uncomfortable, but left untreated, most cases of dry eye worsens and the worse it gets the harder it is to treat. This can lead to a worsening quality of life. Our clinic is nationally recognized as a dry eye treatment “center of excellence”. If you suffer from macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa or a host of other potentially blinding eye disease, come see our low vision specialist. We are one of the few low vision specialists in the Rockville area.
Diabetic Eye Examination with Dilation
Diabetes is a major health problem. It affects the smallest blood vessels in the body first, and as the blood vessels in the eye are some of the smallest, eye examinations become extremely important. Your PCP and Endocrinologist like you to have diabetic eye examinations with dilation because it’s the only way they can know how your blood vessels “look” without having to do surgery – your eye doctor can actually see working blood vessels inside your body through your eyes. Dilation helps the doctor see more; since shining light into the pupil of the eye makes the pupil smaller, without dilation it’s like looking through a key hole to see a whole room. Dilation is like opening the door for the doctor.
Flashes and Floaters
Spots in your vision occurring with or without flashes of bright light might be something serious, so be sure to see your eye doctor within 24 hours if you note these things. The good news is that most of the problems flashes and floaters might indicate can be fixed if caught fast. Don’t delay, be sure to go to your eye doctor if you see flashes or floaters ASAP. If you’ve seen floaters for a while but you see a change in them, such as an increase in floaters and/or flashes, you need to see your doctor promptly as well.
Community Health Screenings
The eye doctors at shady grove eye and vision care serve the community by participating in health screenings of all kinds.
LASIK surgery evaluation
LASIK is a procedure that corrects nearsightedness, astigmatism and in some cases extreme farsightedness. It can reduce or eliminate your dependence on eyewear for a long period of time if successful. It’s important to discuss the potential outcomes and know what to expect post surgery now and down the road, so be sure to ask your eye doctor before considering the surgery
OCT of the Eye (Optical Coherence Tomography)
This fascinating newer technology allows doctors to see deep within the layers of the retina, or the back of the eye. The retina is equivalent to the light sensing “film” in a camera, and vital to health vision. Doctors use data from the OCT to see deeper than their scopes and dilation can, even to just behind the eye to ensure the health of the optic nerve.
Color Vision Testing
Have you wondered whether you or someone in your family is color blind? Have your optometrist check at your eye exam. Color blindness tests are fast and accurate and can address your concerns
Binocular Vision Testing
Clarity of vision is only one part of an eye exam. How the eyes work together determines how “comfortable” your vision is. Doctors performing comprehensive eye examinations will evaluate the clarity of your sight as well as it’s comfort. This is exceedingly important in our near based world with mobile devices, ipads and lap tops. Significant eyestrain and headaches might be caused by a problem with the binocular vision system so be sure to ask your optometrist about binocular vision testing
Advanced Contact Lens Options
If you’ve been told you can’t wear contact lenses because of high prescription, astigmatism, need for bifocals or dry eyes think again. The technologies behind contact lenses have evolved to a point where most people can comfortably wear contact lenses and expect correction of even major vision correction needs. Ask your eye doctor about Duette lenses by Synergeyes, Scleral lenses, multifocal contact lenses and daily disposable contact lens options as well
Improve Vision for Distance, intermediate and near with glasses or contact lenses
Our doctors are experts in vision correction. Every day we provide optical options that improve vision at all ranges for those in need, often with just one option.
The doctors at Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, as contact lens specialists are experts in treating vision blur and distortion caused by keratoconus and other distortions of the corneal surface of the eye. Advanced options are available like scleral contact lenses and Synergeyes “duette” lenses.

Problems with Red Eyes
A red eye isn’t something that just needs an over the counter eye drop – it might be something more serious. Please don’t assume your red eyes are normal and come in for an evaluation. Most red eyes are easily treated, but left untreated might develop into something more serious.
Problems with Tearing Eyes
If your eye or eyes tear a lot, you may have one of several eyelid conditions that need to be addressed before it gets worse. Please contact your eye doctor and have them evaluate this annoying problem which often can affect the skin around your eyes as well.
Problems with Mucous (Mucus, discharge in/around eyes)
Mucous if often a sign of an infection, so be sure to set up an appointment to have it checked. If your eyes seem glued shut in the morning and get better as the day goes on, it can be anything from allergies to infection to something called “mucous fishing syndrome”. Be sure to let us check your eyes.
Problems with Lumps/Bumps on Eyelid
The longer a bump is left on the eyelid, the more risk it might advance, even to the point of needing surgery. Be sure to see your eye doctor as soon as you first notice the bump on the eye.
Problems with Peripheral Vision
If you are bumping into things or don’t feel like you see so well to either side, up or down it might be a serious eye condition. Don’t wait – most problems that cause this can be corrected if caught early; if left too long they may result in blindness so be sure to tell your eye doctor if you notice this.
Problems with Pain in the Eye
Pain in the eye should not be left unchecked. Actually, most people can’t tolerate eye pain. Eye pain with sensitivity to light may be an even larger problem so please be sure to see your eye doctor as soon as possible if you experience eye pain and/or sensitivity to light.
Seeing Double Vision
Double vision may be a sign of a serious neurological disorder. Doubling can be described in two ways. First, an “overlapping” image, which is usually not serious where the double images overlap each other to some degree. Images that are totally separate are more of a concern and you should see your eye doctor immediately.
Fluctuation in Vision
Vision fluctuation may be caused by excessive near point demands like smart phone use, ipad use or computer use, but also may mean you have dry eye syndrome or eye focus issues related to changing vision. Be sure to tell your optometrist if you have fluctuating vision.
Eyestrain or eye fatigue as it’s sometimes called can cause difficulties with work or enjoyment, reduced time at the computer and other lifestyle issues. Relief may come with as simple a recommendation as to blink more, use an eye drop or you might need some type of correction with an eyeglass or contact lens.
Blue Light Exposure
There is much discussion in the eye care community about exposure to the short wavelength blue light emitted by computers and hand held digital devices. Blue light has been suggested to cause problems related to sleep and even be a contributing factor to eye diseases such as macular degeneration. There are lens treatments that filter the blue light so be sure to ask your optometrist.
Protecting the eyelids, eye surface and inside of the eye from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation is important in all age groups. It is well know that damage from UV light is cumulative over a persons lifetime, and as the eyelids are very thin and without much protection, wrinkles, lumps and bumps and even cancers of the eyelids can result. UV light has also been implicated as a factor in cataracts and macular degeneration as well, so be sure to protect your eyes with polarized sunglasses when outside.
We read at school, at work and use our digital devices more and more. Seeing clearly and comfortably for reading is a quality of life issue that should not be ignored. Let our doctors discuss options for seeing clearly and comfortably for reading and midrange activities like computers and tablets.
HD Digital Lenses
Lenses used to be “ground” manually; now they can be customized by being ground and surfaced using lasers and digital technologies that provide wider, more comfortable viewing areas through the lens for all patients, especially no-line bifocal wearers, progressive and multifocal lens wearers.
