Trachoma

Chlamydia infection is responsible for Trachoma. Trachoma is the leading cause of blindness in the world and is most often seen in third world and developing nations. Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact and sharing of items such as pillowcases and towels. The infection can scar the underside of the eyelids, which causes them to turn in, causing the eyelashes to rub the surface of the cornea which can lead to corneal inflammation and infection. Antibiotic therapy is effective in treating this condition if diagnosed early enough.
