Instructions for removing a gas-permeable or hard contact lens

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly using a pure soap that does not contain additives - anti-bacterial pump soap is the best. Be sure to rinse all soap off of your hands before handling contact lens. If necessary, use a fingernail brush to thoroughly clean the fingers and hands.
  2. Close or cover the drain when working over a basin. Dr. Glazier recommends putting a paper towel over the drain and the bottom of the sink.
  3. Place a mirror flat on a table or counter in front of you. Bend your head forward until your chin is on your chest and your eyes are looking straight down into the mirror
  4. YOU MUST KEEP BOTH EYES OPEN WHILE REMOVING YOUR CONTACT LENSES
  5. Open your eyes as wide as you can and place your right index finger at the outer corner of the right eye. Pull the corner down, straight out and then up towards the top of your ear. Forcefully wink the eye towards the end of your "pulling". The lens should "pop" off the eye.
  6. Keep trying until the lens pops off.
  7. Place 2-3 drops of cleaning solution on the lens. Gently rub the lens for 20 seconds between the thumb and index finger or in the palm with your index finger.
  8. Rinse the lens with rinsing solution until you are sure all the cleaner has been removed.
  9. NEVER PUT A LENS WITH CLEANER ON INTO YOUR EYE
  10. Place the clean lens into your contact lens case and cover it with wetting/soaking solutions.
  11. Repeat for the other eye
