MonoVision is a painless, non-surgical technique using contact lenses that can help you to see distance and read up-close in the same pair of contact lenses. If your arms are getting too short to read, even if you have astigmatism, MonoVision can free you of any need for eyeglasses. How does monovision work?  Most people can see distance targets (greater than 6 feet away) and near targets (within 22 inches from their nose) without difficulty before the age of 40-42 without needing glasses specifically for near. After the age of 40, the focusing system of the eye is not as efficient. When this happens, distance vision is clear and near will be strenuous or blurry (see Presbyopia). Our dominant eye is the eye that most efficiently views distance objects. If you look at a distance object greater than 20 feet away and cover each eyes, the object will look sharper with one eye than the other. Most people who need eyeglasses or contact lenses can see clearly with only one eye, their dominant eye, corrected; even if the non-dominant eye is blurry they won't notice it!. You can test for your dominant eye by closing one eye and looking down your finger at an object greater than 20 feet away from you. Which eye did you look with? That eye is probably your dominant (distance viewing) eye. MonoVision takes advantage of the fact that most people can see fine for distance with a corrected dominant eye while the non-dominant eye is under-corrected with a contact lens to see close-up. If your distance vision is fine without glasses or contacts, you may simply need one contact lens (a reading contact lens) in your non-dominant eye to help you read. This is also called MonoVision. You would wear one contact lens only! MonoVision is successful approximately 72% of the time! MonoVision is just A solution, not a PERFECT solution. It enables you to go to a restaurant and read the menu and look across the room when you need to without fumbling with reading glasses. It is great for lecturers who don't want to wear glasses infront of an audience. It can be adjusted for computer use at the awkward mid-range distance that so many of us struggle with. There are NO PERMANENT CHANGES or health related concerns with MonoVision. The second the contact lenses are removed, the vision is back to what it was without correction. The side effects of monovision are subtle, temporary decreased depth perception and mild headaches that go away as you get used to MonoVision, but these only occur in a small percentage of monovision fits. Both these side effects are reversible. It sounds crazy to some people but it works! and when it works, it changes your quality of life. . . isn't getting rid of glasses without surgery worth a try?

Modified Monovision

Monovision involves wearing a contact in one eye for seeing near with the other eye corrected for distance, so that the patient can view near and distant objects without the need for eyeglasses. While monovision is a great option for totally reducing or eliminating the need for eyeglasses, it can cause eyestrain, loss of depth perception or even double vision. It is especially difficult to drive at night. Lately Dr. Glazier has been utilizing a technique called MM, which stands for modified monovision, which allows patients who have a problem with monovision to see better at near and far. Modified monovision solves monovision complaints greater than 90% of the time.
