The Vision Therapy Program
at Shady Grove Eye & Vision Care

The discipline of vision therapy, or orthoptic training, is a type of physical therapy for the eyes and brain. It is a highly effective non-surgical treatment for many common visual problems such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, double vision, convergence insufficiency, accommodative disorders and visual tracking difficulties. It is common to exhibit symptoms of eye fatigue, double vision or loss of place or concentration while reading. Diagnosis of such anomalies is made after a thorough comprehensive eye examination as well as an in depth binocular vision evaluation.

Each program is tailored to the specific needs of each patient. The therapy is a compilation of various eye exercises performed weekly or biweekly under direct doctor supervision and supplemented with homework between visits. Various types of treatment devices are used including corrective lenses, therapeutic lenses and prism lenses all of which are regulated medical devices. Also utilized are optical filters, eye patches, electronic targets with timing mechanisms, computer software, vestibular equipment and visual-motor-sensory integration training devises.

Progress, subjectively and objectively, is closely monitored after specific milestones are accomplished. Continuation, redirection or cessation of vision therapy is decided at each re-evaluation performed. Discontinuation of therapy is decided when the objective data has achieved normal limits along with subjective improvement of presenting visual challenges. Once therapy has ceased, it is understood that the patient is equipped with the skills and abilities needed and that no further treatment should be necessary.
